Meeting Fitness and Nutrition Goals with Personalized Nutrition Coaching[Podcast Series]

  • [:54] Dr. Bantham introduces her guest, Dr. Jessica Bachman

    • Dr. Jessica Bachman is Director of Operations at Stronger U Nutrition

    • She is a Registered Dietitian and has a history of working in academia

  • [1:10] Stronger U Nutrition origin story

    • “When you're making those day-to-day decisions, or you're going out to restaurants, or when things aren't following the meal plan that you wanted to follow, you know, things are thrown your way that you have to make decisions on the spot. You don't necessarily, you just don’t  have access to working with someone. And so Mike recognized that having a coach in your pocket, someone who could be more available, would be a key to really unlock people.”

  • [6:08] Serving the nutrition and fitness needs of members

    • “And so it's a really great synergy where the gym is extremely important, and what you're doing there to move towards your goals, but then we can take over and stay within our scope of practice when we're talking about health behaviors, talking about nutrition behaviors.”

  • [9:24] Intersection of nutrition and fitness with members taking obesity medications

    • “So it's really been such a unique tool that I think helps both their fitness performance, also helps them prioritize things in nutrition that they wanted to prioritize the whole time, but their own heads, their own feelings and thoughts really got in the way of them being able to apply them.”

  • [13:16] Personalized nutrition coaching

    • “And so there's so much individualization about how members respond, how people feel and what their needs are, that on a weekly basis, the coach is reviewing and adjusting as needed to make sure that member keeps moving towards their goals. And so it's very responsive, reflective and really helping people, you know, assess, is this actually my goal?”

  • [19:18]  AI and nutrition coaching

    • “There's still so many things behind nutrition that I don't think they'll ever take over coaching, right? And I don't want people to think they replace that. So it's a foe in some ways, because it might pull away from these really high quality nutrition coaches that are out there that really can provide a lot, because the cost of a nutrition coach is much more than an AI tool. And so there is definitely, that is one of the headwinds that we have in this space right now.”

  • [24:36] Supporting habit formation

    • “That'd be very hard for AI to ever do, but to really talk you through developing a new identity as this healthy person that just does the things without having to think about them.”

  • [26:42] Supporting New Year’s Resolutions

    • “It's motivation to get started, and that's what people need sometimes. And if they're supported by a coach, both in their gym and with a nutrition coach, maybe this is the time they actually stick with it.”
